Who: Students between the ages of 7-10 who are developing numeracy skills through our tailored math literacy programs.
What:
While it may seem that word problems are simply a math task, they actually serve as a crucial reading comprehension exercise. To effectively tackle word problem strategies, students must:
- Understand the language and vocabulary (e.g., each, difference, sum)
- Identify important information
- Visualize the problem mentally
- Determine what the question is requesting
- Organize their thinking
Even if a child grasps basic math concepts like addition, they may still face challenges with the language demands present in word problems.
In our math group, we assist students in breaking down the language of word problems, identifying key words, visualizing the problem, and crafting a number sentence to enhance their numeracy skills development.
