The Language of Math

Who:
Grade 1 and Grade 2 students who are developing numeracy, literacy and language skills.

What:

It may appear that word problems are “just math” — but they are also a reading comprehension task.

To solve a word problem, students must:

  • understand the language and vocabulary (e.g. each, difference, sum)
  • identify important information
  • picture the problem in their mind
  • decide what the question is asking
  • organize their thinking

A child may understand the math concept, such as adding, but still struggle with the language demands of word problems.

In our math group, we help students break down language, learn how to identify KEY words, learn how to draw the problem and learn how to generate a number sentence.
